Trained as a pilot in Starfleet Academy in North America, Earth, on Venus, and Sol System's Asteroid Belt.
Upon graduating from Academy, was member of the Starfleet team that made first contact with the Tarkannans.
After Federation-Cardassian Treaty's signing in 2370, Chakotay resigned from Starfleet, and joined the Maquis terrorist organization, commanding of one of their ships. Unbeknownst to him, Starfleet operative Lieutenant Tuvok (see file) had infiltrated his crew. In 2371, Chakotay's ship was lost in the Badlands; the U.S.S Voyager went to investigate, resulting in its own disappearance on stardate 48307.5. Recent contact re-established with Voyager has revealed that, after both ships were hurled in to Delta Quadrant by an alien entity, Chakotay's personnel were found and integrated with surviving members of Voyager crew. To facilitate this merger, Chakotay was given field rank of commander and assigned first officer by Captain Janeway. Chakotay has served with distinction, despite occasional dissent with the Captain.
In 2371, Chakotay's consciousness, displaced from his body by trianic energy beings, successfully prevented the Voyager from re-entering the being's home nebula, saving the crew. In 2372, Chakotay made contact on a planet with a humanoid species his Native American ancestors had known, millennia ago, as the Sky Spirits. Later that year, Chakotay and Captain Janeway contracted a virus on a Delta Quadrant planet, which resisted all treatment attempts, but which remained benign as long as they remained on the planet. Voyager, with the help of a Vidiian physician, did find a cure, after several months of Chakotay and Janeway's voluntary planetbound exile.
In 2372, Chakotay believed he had fathered a child with DNA stolen from him by Seska, a former Maquis who turned out to be a surgically altered Cardassian operative, and who had left the ship to join the hostile Kazon. After a Kazon takeover of the Voyager, which was eventually reversed, the child turned out not to be his.
In 2373, Chakotay discovered a colony of former Borg drones in the Nekrit Expanse. His injuries were healed when he briefly entered a collective consciousness with them. He later assisted them in establishing a group consciousness of their own, which they felt necessary for a life of harmony.
In 2374, he took command of Voyager during its alliance with the Borg against Species 8472, when Captain Janeway was incapacitated. Chakotay was instrumental in separating Borg drone Seven of Nine from the rest of the Collective. Later that year, Chakotay played a pivotal role in defeating aliens who were attacking the Voyager crew through their dreams.
